The Word of God…what a sweet gift He has given us to store in our hearts and minds!
But sometimes it’s hard to memorize His Word.
Thankfully though, God is gracious in giving us wisdom to create ways to do this while mothering our little ones. I have been a stay at home mom for the past four years. And most of those years have been uncommitted to Jesus. I knew that I loved Jesus, but did I really live a life that showed it? So I picked up this book, “The Mission of Motherhood: Touching Your Child’s Heart for Eternity,” and the thought of accepting my role as a mother who follows Christ and puts Him first really spoke to me. Sally Clarkson’s words stoked the fire in my heart, creating a burning desire for more of Jesus and less of me.
So instead of moping about all of the time that motherly duties take up, I am embracing it! I am learning to trust that God has put me right where He wants me. But not only do I have this desire to praise God, I also really want to truly know Him.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
If Scripture is God-breathed, or inspired by God, then we have the greatest opportunity to know who He is through His Word! Isn’t it such a blessing? And the Word of God will equip us for every good work. Would you not call motherhood a good work? Because when my girls wrap their sweet, little arms around my neck and say, “I love you mommy,” it is good. I have to admit that when I first read this verse, I thought about my kids. You mean to tell me that Scripture could shape my children into servants of God? Well, yes, of course it can. But before I could train my children in the way they should go, maybe I needed to first ask God where He wanted me to go? And His answer: to Him.
1. Post It Notes
I’m not sure if it drives my husband crazy, but I have sticky notes posted in all areas of the house. And every time I see one, I stop to read it. You can also use this method just to be reminded of how good our God is and how great His love is for us. If you get bright sticky notes, they catch your attention more often than the plain ones. And you can fancy it up with some cute glitter gel pens. Or make it bold and cute with colorful Sharpies. If pretty design makes you want it more, then design those sticky notes mama!
I’ve been listening to the wonderful new album by Fernando Ortega. And seriously, it has brought me to tears. Find a great artist that turns scripture into lyrics and praise God while memorizing His word! The peace that comes with praise through song is deep. And it can really help on your weary days.
3. Coloring With My Girls
And I don’t mean coloring in their books. Although I do that too. I mean an adult coloring book that is filled with His word. Since it takes awhile to color one page, you get the opportunity to dwell in His Word as you enjoy time with you kids with a relaxing activity. Of course, there are plenty of free resources online to print out as well.
